The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on March 10, 2006 published new guidance about hospital bed safety.

The guidance-which is not a regulation-seeks to reduce the number of patients caught in beds. According to the FDA, 691 entrapments occurred between January 1, 1985, and January 1, 2006. In those incidents, 413 patients died and 120 suffered injuries. The document identifies special concerns associated with hospital beds, provides design recommendations for manufacturers, and offers ideas for healthcare facilities to evaluate the safety of beds already in use.
