In response to incidents at area hospitals, University Hospital in Syracuse, NY, began issuing security identification (ID) badges to all visitors in March 2006.
Although staff had been trained to work on the new system, it took them a while to learn how to use the machine that manufactured the visitor IDs, a hospital spokesperson told the Syracuse Post-Standard.
Visitors must provide their name and photo, as well as the name of the patient whom they're visiting. Staff enter the information into the machine, which then produces a badge that is valid for one day. If the line of visitors becomes too long, staff can issue handwritten badges. The hospital plans to issue plastic badges to recurring visitors, an official told the Post-Standard.
