In an effort to be more customer-friendly, a growing number of hospitals are issuing pagers to patients so they do not have to sit in crowded waiting rooms, reports the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The pagers allow patients to visit hospital attractions, walk the halls, eat in the cafeteria, or visit the gift shop. The pagers also enhance privacy by eliminating the need to call out patients' names.

Officials from hospitals that use the pagers say they are a good example of healthcare providers looking at customer service concepts from other industries and using them to enhance the patient experience, according to the Post-Gazette.

Hospitals also give the devices to friends and family members who wait at the hospital during an outpatient procedure. This way, doctors can summon family members quickly to receive updates.
