Consumers think privacy and security are the top obstacles to healthcare providers establishing electronic health records (EHRs), with 44% ranking them as the number one challenge, according to a survey released in February 2006 by Health Industry Insights, in Framingham, MA. Twenty-four percent of respondents cited complexity and cooperation within the healthcare industry as their top concern.
A majority (70%) were unaware of the government initiative to provide EHRs to all citizens by 2014. They were also skeptical of such efforts, with 86% somewhat or very concerned about the healthcare industry's ability to ensure the privacy of protected health information during the EHR transition. Health Industry Insights conducted the survey of 1,095 consumers in late 2005.
