It's been almost three years since the compliance date for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act's (HIPAA's) privacy rule, and many organizations still have a lot of work to do, according to a survey released in the March issue of Medical Records Briefing, published by HCPro. Only 61% of 104 survey respondents reported that their organizations' privacy compliance efforts are complete, while 37% claimed that their efforts still need some work.
If you can't have privacy without security, many organizations are in trouble. Sixty percent of survey respondents reported that their HIPAA security compliance efforts still need some work, and 7% admitted their efforts need a lot of work.
The good news is that most organizations understand the importance of staff training. Ninety-six percent of those who responded to the benchmarking survey reported that they will retrain staff, while 63% said they plan to do so annually.
