An influx of influenza (flu) patients forced the emergency room at Banner Baywood Medical Center in Mesa, AZ, to close down for three hours on January 1, 2006.

The surge in patients taxed the hospital's staff and exceeded its bed capacity, the Associated Press (AP) reported. Patients occupied all 240 beds at Banner Baywood and the emergency room had 50 people in the lobby and 43 more waiting for beds when the hospital closed its doors. Staff stopped services in the endoscopy department and used its beds for arriving patients. The hospital also canceled elective surgeries.

Arizona is among a handful of states-mostly in the Southwest-that had widespread flu cases in mid-January, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
