State surveyors conducting nursing home inspections often overlook deficiencies, according to a new Government Accountability Office (GAO) report.
The report, Nursing Homes: Despite Increased Oversight, Challenges Remain in Ensuring High-Quality Care and Resident Safety, suggested that much-touted improvement in nationwide nursing home care during a five-year period was actually a result of missed problems, not solved problems. The GAO also found that states typically take too long to investigate nursing homes complaints.
The report noted that the states and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) must overcome the following challenges:
- The cost of retrofitting older homes with automatic sprinklers
- Retaining and hiring qualified surveyors
- Managing increased workload and stretched financial resources
