The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently urged emergency approval for bulk enumeration of national provider identifiers (NPIs).

Currently, providers obtain NPIs on an individual basis by submitting a paper or Web-based application. CMS asked the Office of Management and Budget to approve a bulk NPI application that would allow organizations to request NPIs for multiple providers. CMS asked for speedy approval of the request.

"We cannot reasonably comply with the normal clearance procedures because public harm will ensue from the continued denial of access from providers obtaining [NPIs] en masse," CMS stated in its notice to the Office of Management and Budget.
