A new, $19 million state hospital in Milledgeville, GA, remains empty since it was built in 2003 due to its "nonfunctional" condition, The Macon Telegraph reports.
The building was intended to treat mentally ill people charged with committing crimes but has numerous problems, state officials told The Macon Telegraph. They include improperly functioning electronic locks and fire alarm systems, a leaky roof, ceilings not properly attached to the structure, air vents that can be pushed out to allow access to the space above, and an exterior security fence that the state had to rebuild completely.
State officials are considering legal action against the contractor. The contractor claims it constructed the building to state specifications, according to the The Macon Telegraph.
