Run great meetings with a bias toward action

Dear Medical Staff Leader:

Time is one of the most precious things physicians have to give. No physician wants to give his or her time to a meeting that doesn't accomplish important goals. As a medical staff leader, you can best respect your fellow physicians by ensuring every meeting they attend is an effective use of time.

To accomplish this, you must make sure every item on the agenda is placed there to accomplish something important. Every item should have a bias toward action. When planning the agenda for your meeting, always ask the following questions:

• What action will result from this agenda item at this meeting?
• How will patient care, physicians, and the hospital be better as a result of that action?

Every agenda item should be important to physicians who make best use of their expertise, concern, and the precious time they are giving over to that meeting. Run your meetings this way, and physicians will not only thank you, they will actually show up at your meetings.
