At times, medical staff professionals must deal with physicians whose conduct is detrimental to the work environment. Negative behaviors can range from verbal or physical attacks to intimidation to defiant attitudes toward hospital leadership.
Once the bad behavior is identified, it should be the focal point of taking corrective actions. Focus on the behavior when addressing the problem. Avoid making the situation all about the physician. Ensure the goals and expectations are clear and document all complaints for reference.
Do not make exceptions for “exceptional physicians.” Help the practitioner understand the policies and rules in place have no flexibility.
This week’s tip is from The Medical Staff Professional’s Handbook by Anne Roberts, CPMSM, CPCS and Maggie Palmer, MSA, CPMSM, CPCS.
