Balancing the costs of hospitalists

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, August 3, 2011

A new study found that although patients cared for by hospitalists often have shorter lengths of stay and lower hospital costs, they have more visits to the emergency room and readmissions and higher expenses. Researchers, which looked at Medicare patients, estimate the bounce back costs $1.1 billion across all patients. Health care utilization after discharge may counter balance the savings during hospitalization that are associated with hospitalist care, according to the study, which was published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.
