Tip of the week: Determine what happens after hospitalist candidates are identified

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, July 27, 2011

The following is a step-by-step guide for lining up interviews with hospitalist candidates.

  • Decide how quickly your program will review CVs and determine how to initiate contact with
  • desirable candidates  (No more than 48 hours recommended standard)
  • Assign an individual to review incoming CVs, such as the program director or designee, practice administrator, or another person
  • Decide which individual will make the initial contact with the candidate, and assess whether
  • more than one individual will participate at this stage
  • Determine how the initial contact with the candidate will be made—phone call (strongly recommended or e-mail
  • After the initial contact, decide whether to pursue the candidate and define how this decision will be made and determine which individual will have the final say
  • Hospitalist program director or designee and/or practice administrator usually make the decision
  • Determine the method by which desirable candidates will be notified of the program’s interest and invited for an on-site interview and whether it will be at the time of initial contact, afterward, via telephone call (recommended), e-mail or letter (less personal and not recommended in most circumstances)
  • Decide whether and how candidates who are not chosen for interviews will be notified and inform candidate he or she is not being pursued as a candidate (recommended)
  • Discuss whether an information packet or e-mail will be sent to desirable candidates after the initial contact
  • Send an “interview invitation” with pertinent information (strongly recommended) and consider sending an additional information packet to desirable candidates or a video or DVD describing the hospitalist program, the hospital, and other important information
