Number of nocturnists on the rise

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, June 15, 2011

More hospitals are employing nocturnists to counter “the weekend effect,” a worrisome trend of patients experiencing worse outcomes during the overnight hours than during the day. According to The Washington Post National, the nocturnist trend is spurred by the general acceptance of hospitalists, reduced resident work hours, and governmental pressure to improve patient safety. About 1,500 hospitals employ at least one nocturnist, compared with fewer than 100 a decade ago.
