Think that disruptive behavior doesn’t happen at your hospital? Maybe so, but it’s still worth dusting off that disruptive physician policy. According to a study of more than 840 physicians and physician leaders from QuantiaMD and the American College of Physician Executives (ACPE), more than 70% of physicians say that disruptive physician behavior occurs at least once a month at their organizations, and more than 10% say that such incidents occur daily. The behavior ranges from using profanity to refusing to uphold protocols. In rare cases, the behavior includes assault. Sixty percent of the respondents indicated that their organizations have received written complaints from patients and families, and 50% have lost patients due to the behavior. Check out MedicalStaffLeader.com for helpful tips on handling disruptive physicians and creating a policy that your medical staff can live up to.
