Need to pee? There's an app for that

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, May 31, 2011

Hospitalists may want to consider a new hobby: writing apps for smartphones. Take William Johnston III, MD, a urologist practicing at NorthShore University HealthSystem in Chicago, who created an app to help patients prone to kidney stones drink more water. “The problem is that people don’t drink as much as they think they do, so keeping track of fluid intake to ensure adequate hydration can greatly reduce kidney stones,” Johnston stated in an interview with Physicians News Digest. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the app is helping patients reduce their risk. Johnston is also developing an app to help patients with enlarged prostates monitor their urine flow, as well as an app that will provide prostate surgery patients with day-by-day perioperative and discharge instructions. Sounds like a great way to reduce readmissions. These are just a few examples of the more than 17,000 apps available today.
