Weekend admissions have higher mortality rates

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, May 25, 2011

Patients who are admitted to the hospital during a weekend are more likely to die than patients who are admitted during the week, according to a recent article in the Archives of Surgery. Researchers from Tufts University Medical School analyzed data from 29,991,621 patients (mean age 46 years) with a broad range of diagnoses. The selected patients had been admitted to a hospital for nonelective reasons from 2003 through 2007, and 28.8 percent were admitted on a weekend, reports EmaxHealth. After adjusting for age, sex, race, income and payer, hospital characteristics, and other health conditions, being admitted on the weekend was associated with a 10.5% greater chance of dying.
