SHM releases position on hospitalist credentialing and medical staff privileges

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, April 26, 2011

The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) on Friday took a stand on hospitalist credentialing and medical staff privileges with a published position statement on the SHM website.

SHM has not taken a formal position on how hospitalists’ clinical roles should evolve and recognizes the growing trend that specialties, including general surgeons, neurologists, psychiatrists, and obstetricians, are practicing in hospital medicine, according to the statement.

“Hospital [m]edicine groups and hospital medical staffs should jointly determine the point at which it may be appropriate to develop a separate medical staff credentialing category and privileging criteria for hospitalists, because the skill set required of hospitalists in that institution no longer fits within an existing credentialing category,” states SHM.

SHM recommends that medical staffs ensure hospitalist competency in patient care and safe outcomes, as well as competencies established by the institution site. SHM endorses certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM), the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM), and the American Board of Pediatrics.

SHM supports focused practice in hospital medicine (FPHM) credentials offered by the ABIM and ABFM, as well as SHM-assigned designations of fellowship in hospital medicine (FHM), senior fellow in hospital medicine (SFHM), and Master in Hospital Medicine (MHM).
