Physician quality incentive payments soared to $234 million, according to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ 2009 Physician Quality Reporting System and e-Prescribing Experience Report. The results of the Physician Quality Reporting System (formerly known as Physician Quality Reporting Initiative) indicate that nearly 120,000 physicians and other eligible healthcare professionals received $234 million in 2009, surpassing previous payments of $92.4 million in 2008 and $36 million in 2007, according to HealthLeaders Media.

The largest portion of specialties that receive incentive payments were emergency medicine, cardiology, and ophthalmology.
