Hospital spending on the decline

Even though overall healthcare costs are rising, hospital spending is declining, according to a recent report from the American Hospital Association.

Although hospital care makes up the single largest category of the overall healthcare spending, the costs associate with hospital care declined from 43% in 1980 to 33% in 2009, according to “The Cost of Caring: Drivers of Spending on Hospital Care,” published in March. The report states that one of the main reasons for the discrepancy in costs is that health insurance premiums have outpaced other services.
