New York has most end-of-life hospital stays
Hospitalist Leadership Connection, April 19, 2011
New York ranks as the state with the most aggressive end-of-life care. It has the highest number (46%) of chronically ill patients in the hospital at the time of death, according to researchers at Dartmouth College.
The study looked at the Manhattan hospital region, including Brooklyn and Staten Island areas. Researchers say that the disparity in end-of-life hospital care in New York may be financially driven. Researchers assert that hospitals may want patients to stay in the hospital because Medicare typically pays more for hospital-based care compared to community services, according to a New York Times article.
