Date set for healthcare reform appeal

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, April 5, 2011

On June 8, the Obama administration will present oral arguments before a Florida appeals court on the constitutionality of healthcare reform law, according to a Bloomberg article last week.

Last year, President Obama signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, aiming to create the first universal health insurance for most Americans. On Jan. 31, U.S. District Judge Roger Vinson decided that the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act’s mandate that Americans obtain medical insurance starting in 2014 was a violation of the U.S. Constitution and, therefore, the entire act is invalid.

The hearing to appeal the lower court ruling will take place in Atlanta.

Currently, three federal judges have upheld healthcare reform’s constitutionality, while two have not, according to ABC News.
