House bill proposes to lift ban on physician-owned hospitals

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, April 5, 2011

A new House bill could repeal Section 6001 of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Art, lifting the ban on physician-owned hospitals, according to an American Medical News article last week.

Introduced by Reps Doc Hastings (R-Wash.) and Sam Johnson (R-Texas), the bill, if enacted, would revise the healthcare law provision that prohibits new physician-owned hospitals from forming and halts existing institutions from expanding.

Advocates assert that allowing physician ownership of hospitals creates a virile marketplace. However, others argue that physician-owned hospitals create a slippery slope on which the hospitals would give preference to lucrative patients, depriving low-income patients the right of care.
