Longest living Americans ever

Reaching an all-time high, U.S. life expectancy soared to 78.2 years of age in 2009, according to a report released last week by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

White females have the highest life expectancy, followed by black females, white males, and black males. Out of the states, Hawaii had the lowest mortality rate, and West Virginia had the highest.

Ten of the 15 leading causes of death saw significant decreases. The 15 leading causes of death are (in order):

  • Heart disease
  • Malignant neoplasms
  • Chronic lower respiratory disease
  • Cerebrovascular disease
  • Accidents
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Influenza and pneumonia
  • Nephritis, nephritic syndrome, and nephrosis
  • Suicide
  • Septicemia
  • Chronic live disease and cirrhosis
  • Essential hypertension and hypertensive renal disease
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Homicide
