Ask the expert: Who should be part of the crisis management team?

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, March 22, 2011

A crisis management team may be activated to deal with a multitude of problems, such as an abused or impaired patient, as well as a disruptive or dysfunctional patient or family member. Hospitalist programs should not wait until a situation arises to create this team. Rather, create the team during the program’s implementation period.

Members of the crisis management team should vary based on specific circumstances and can include:

  • Nurses
  • Social services practitioners
  • Department of health services/adult protective services representatives
  • Case managers
  • Legal counsel/elder law representatives
  • Mental health providers
  • Spiritual advisors
  • Hospital administrators
  • Physicians
  • Law enforcement representatives
