Hospitalist-surgeon comanagement has no effect on outcomes

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, March 15, 2011

Despite the fact that more hospitalists are comanaging surgery patients today, hospitalist-neurosurgeon comanagement does not improve patient outcomes, according to a new study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Physician Assistants.

Researchers found that implementing a hospitalist-neurosurgery comanagement service does not improve mortality rates, readmission rates, length of stay, or patient satisfaction. It did, however, reduce hospital costs with a savings of $1,400 per admission. In addition, providers’ perceived that care was better.
