Attributes of a high-functioning practice

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, March 15, 2011

In an editorial in the March issue of The Hospitalist, John Nelson, MD, MHM, names eight identifiable qualities of a high-functioning practice:

  • Culture of practice ownership
  • Effective group leader
  • Decision-making autonomy
  • Hospitalist engagement in clinical quality and systems improvement
  • Social connections between providers
  • Active hospitalist involvement in recruitment
  • Understanding of performance data
  • Decision-making not solely based on consensus

“It is possible for a practice to have all of these attributes and still provide disappointing clinical quality for its patients, but that seems really unlikely to me. And even a practice that provides superior clinical care probably won’t be able to do so for long without high-functioning business operations,” Nelson says in the article.
