Mass General to pay $1 million in HIPAA violations
Hospitalist Leadership Connection, March 9, 2011
Mass General is doing penance for losing the protected health information of 192 patients of Mass General’s Infectious Disease Associates, an outpatient practice that treats patients with various illnesses, including HIV and AIDS. An employee of Mass General accidentally left the documents, containing patient names, medical record number, diagnoses, and other sensitive information, on a subway train while commuting to work. For not having proper processes in place to protect documents when they are taken off premises, Mass General will pay a $1 million fine and enter into a corrective action plan with the Department of Health and Human Services.
