Anti-microbial soaps a wash?
Hospitalist Leadership Connection, March 9, 2011
Republicans may be washing pharmacy and retail store shelves of anti-microbial soaps because of the affect that the ingredients in such soaps, namely triclosan and triclocarban, have on the environment, reports Politico.com. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) is one of the republicans aiming to ban anti-microbial soaps, with the help of the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility. If Markey and the environmental agencies achieve their goal, hospitals may not be immune. The group advocating to take anti-microbial soaps off the shelves maintains that anti-microbial soaps are no more effective than regular soap, but American consumers buy the products to stave off germs in homes and the work place.
