Would you write a sick note for a nonsick patient?
Hospitalist Leadership Connection, March 1, 2011
Physicians in Wisconsin have been accused of writing sick notes to patients without first evaluating them so that they may be absent from work to attend rallies in the state capitol in Madison.
The American College of Physicians (ACP) released a press release on Monday, reminding its 130,000 members that honesty is a core professional obligation.
“This has most recently been discussed in Wisconsin, but it’s not a state-based issue, like a state law,” said Steven B. Pearson, MD, FACP, governor of the Wisconsin Chapter of ACP in the press release. “Rather it is a universal ethics principle on which ethics policy is based.”
The ACP reminds organizations and internists to refer to its Ethics Manual for policies and case studies on ethics.
