AHA calls on hospital leaders to improve wellness culture

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, January 25, 2011

The American Hospital Association (AHA) this month released a report, A Call to Action: Creating a Culture of Health, asking hospital leaders to identify best practices in employee health and wellness.

The report from AHA’s long-range policy committee focuses on the wellness component of better healthcare. Other pillars include health coverage for all, paid for all; best information; highest quality care; and most efficient, affordable care.

Eight hundred and seventy six hospitals responded, reporting that they witnessed a range of health employment programs (e.g., weight-lost, gym member benefits) but felt that it was important to engage all employees and move from a program-based approach to a general culture change. They also reported seeing little return-on-investment data. They said commitment to leadership role models for staff participation is critical.

AHA recommends the following to hospitals:

  • Serve as a role model of health for the community
  • Create a culture of healthy living
  • Provide a variety of program offerings
  • Provide positive and negative incentives
  • Track participation and outcomes
  • Measure for return on investment
  • Focus on sustainability
