Hospitalist mentoring deficient

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, January 25, 2011

Hospitalist mentoring may be lacking, according to “Survey of US academic hospitalist leaders about mentorship and academic activities in hospitalists groups,” published in the January Journal of Hospital Medicine.

Researchers surveyed 57 academic hospitalist leaders about their general impressions of group resources, services, recruitment, priorities, and mentoring of faculty.

They found that hospitalist group leaders’ biggest concerns were about adequate hospitalist mentorship and possible burnout that might lead to physician turnover. In addition, hospitalist group leaders also wanted to expand nonclinical activities, such as teaching and research. In general, hospitalist leaders felt generally unsupported, financially and philosophically, according to the study.

“Academic hospital medicine groups have an acute need for mentoring and career development programs. These programs should target both individual hospitalists and their leaders while also helping to enhance scholarly work,” states the study.
