In the February issue of Medical Staff Briefing, Anne Roberts, CPCS, CPMSM, senior director of medical affairs at Children’s Medical Center in Dallas, shares some of her tips for being a strong MSP leader. One strategy is to focus on team building. Once a month, engage the staff in an activity that isn’t related to work. The activity can take place at work and during working hours, but make sure that employees can escape from their tasks for an hour or two and focus on getting to know each other. This could be a pot-luck or catered lunch, a holiday celebration, or a team-building activity from The Big Book of Team Building Games: Trust-Building Activities, Team Spirit Exercises, and Other Fun Things to Do by John Newstrom and Edward Scannell (McGraw-Hill, 1997), the book Roberts uses to inspire her team’s activities.
