Rural hospitalists compensated 19k more than urban hospitalists

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, January 4, 2011

A new survey confirms the well-known compensation difference that rural hospitalists earn more than suburban and urban hospitalists, according to Becker’s Hospital Review, which extracted data from the Sullivan, Cotter, and Associates’ 2010 Physician Compensation and Productivity Survey. Rural hospitalists earn an annual median of $205,990; suburban hospitalists earn a median of $195,000; and urban hospitalists earn a median of $186,735.

Not surprisingly, hospitalists rank after cardiology, anesthesiology, obstetrics/gynecology, internal medicine, hematology/oncology, and emergency medicine in terms of compensation.

The Society of Hospital Medicine and Medical Group Management Association report that total median compensation is $215,000, and Today’s Hospitalist reports that total mean hospitalist compensation is $214,075.
