Tip of the week: Appropriately allocate for malpractice insurance before starting a hospitalist program

Be sure to provide professional liability and malpractice insurance to protect hospitalists in case patients file suit. A typical hospital requires $1 million/$3 million limits ($1 million per claim, $3 million total for multiple claims), depending on the state. Some states have state-sponsored funds to subsidize malpractice premiums. However, hospitalist candidates expect the employer to pay for liability insurance.
