In the November 25 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine, “Temporal Trends in Rates of Patient Harm Resulting from Medical Care,” the results of patient safety improvement efforts were less than heart warming. The study ran from January 2002 through December 2007. Randomly selected medical records from 10 randomly selected hospitals in North Carolina were reviewed for evidence of harm resulting from medical care.
