Hospitalist compensation plateaus at $214k

After a growth spurt in earnings, hospitalist compensation is leveling off, according to the new 2010 Today’s Hospitalist Compensation & Career Survey. The nearly 700 physicians who treat adults reported a mean compensation of $214,075, up only 1.81% from the 2009 figure of $210,886. From 2008–2009, the report indicated an 8% jump in mean compensation.

Similarly, the September State of Hospital Medicine: 2010 Report Based on 2009 Data report by the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) and the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) indicates that the median compensation for hospitalists treating adults is $215,000.

For pediatric hospitalists, the Today’s Hospitalist report indicated the mean compensation is $169,556, up from $167,067 for a percentage increase of 1.49% year-over-year. SHM and MGMA reported a median compensation of $160,038.
