Q: What obligations should be included in the hospitalist employment agreement?

A: A hospitalist employment agreement should include a section titled “Physician’s Obligations,” and it should list any and all duties the hospital expects of the hospitalist. Some employers provide a specific definition of “hospitalist services” in the employment agreement because this term varies from program to program. For example, if the hospitalist service at a given hospital covers the observation unit or responds to codes, those duties must be spelled out in the contract.
In addition to typical job duties, the physician’s obligation section should spell out other job requirements, such as response times. Some hospital medicine programs contractually obligate the physicians to respond to pages within a certain amount of time. The physician’s obligation clause is also an appropriate section in which to include required committee participation.
