Commercial-academic hybrid hospitalist unit fosters physician-hospital alignment, improved results

When St. Louis–based St. Mary’s Health Center implemented a hospitalist program in 2005, its goal was to fill in for the primary care physicians who no longer practiced in the hospital. However, the hospitalists weren’t engaged. Focused on high patient volume, hospitalists treated patients Monday through Friday, starting promptly at 9 a.m. and running out the door at 4 p.m.
