Organizing a tabletop exercise may be the best way to fulfill your JCAHO requirement for participation in a community emergency drill and to comply with standard EC.2.9.1. These exercises take place around a table with the principal players acting out a specific scenario. You don't need to use actual or simulated patients, and you can vary the timeline to cover a one-to-three day event in one morning or afternoon session.

Here is how to organize a tabletop exercise:

  1. Pick a scenario based on your hazards vulnerability analysis.
  2. Determine which part of your emergency plan to test.
  3. Identify all of the participants and invite representatives from any outside agencies directly involved.
  4. Brief participants on the rules of the exercise.
  5. Write out the scenario. Introduce more issue slips as needed to move the exercise along. Include surprise elements.
  6. Don't presume outcomes.
  7. Identify areas for improvement.
