Benefits of laborists

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, June 29, 2010

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) supports OB/GYN utilizing hospitalists (“laborists”) because they offer benefits for both patients and other physicians, according to an ACOG press release and committee opinion, published in the July issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology.

Cited benefits include patients having more immediate access to doctors who are already in the hospital. By taking emergency call at night, laborists enable nonhospital-based OB/GYNs to maintain a more regular schedule. In addition, a successful laborist program may also be the first step in helping communities with a shortage of OB/GYNs.

Laborists benefit from more predictable schedules, assistance with medical liability insurance premiums, less work-related fatigue, and freedom from the day-to-day administrative duties such as overhead costs, billing, and collections, states the press release.

“This trend of ob-gyn hospitalists and laborists can be viewed as an overall positive development for patients and their physicians,” said Patrice M. Weiss, MD, chair of the Committee on Patient Safety and Quality Improvement, in the press release.
