Reduced work hours associated with lower physician fees

Decreasing physician work hours during the last decade is associated with lower physician fees, according to a new study, “Trends in the work hours of physicians in the United States,” published in the February issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association.

Researchers analyzed census data from 1976 to 2008, evaluating physician work trends with high and low fees. Researchers excluded residents’ work hours since they decreased due to duty hour limits; instead, they looked at nonresident physician hours. Work hours decreased by 5.7%, while physician fees decreased by 25%.

“A steady decrease in hours worked per week during the last decade was observed for all physicians, which was temporally and geographically associated with lower physician fees,” states the study.
