Almost half of hospitalists don't get paid time off

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, May 18, 2010

Forty-five percent of hospitalists report that they do not receive any paid time off, according to the May issue of Today’s Hospitalist, based on its 2009 Compensation & Career Survey. Those without paid time off usually build vacation time into their scheduled days off.

When asked how many paid days off they had, hospitalists reported the following.

  • None (45%)
  • One week (5%)
  • Two weeks (12.5%)
  • Three weeks (13%)
  • More than three weeks (24.5%)

Those that do have paid time off enjoy a mean of about 12 days a year.

Hospitalists might not get as many days off as other specialty physicians, but they do reap other work benefits, according to the article. Most receive health insurance: personal, dental, disability, life, and family insurance; and a 401k plan.
