In previous posts, I outlined five big waves that will transform the practice of hospital medicine.  In addition to bending the cost curve and leading the adoption of information technology in hospitals, hospitalists are taking on roles as medical staff leaders and policy makers.

Hospitalists have taken on increasingly stronger roles in medical staff leadership. Top performing hospitalist programs expect most or all of the physicians on staff to serve on or chair committees and lead quality improvement initiatives. These non-clinical activities typically require a limited time commitment, and can be supported by administrative time, a stipend, or more commonly, the intrinsic satisfaction of being active in the medical staff.
