Q&A: What's the best way to compensate hospitalists?

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, March 30, 2010

A: No definite research data exists regarding the best way to compensate hospitalists, and as might be expected, there are a wide range of opinions. The two principal attributes of compensation are the following:

  • Amount of compensation (e.g., the W-2 wages paid to the hospitalist in a year and benefits)
  • Method of compensation (e.g., whether the compensation is paid as a fixed amount annually, or one that varies based on one or more metrics, such as quality and production)

The Society of Hospital Medicine and the Medical Group Management Association, among others, offer hospitalist compensation data. The metrics surveys use are changing rapidly, and every practice should review several data sources regularly to understand how the market for hospitalist compensation is evolving.
