Multi-disciplinary peer review pilot program paves the way for efficiency and fairness

In 2008, TMC hired The Greeley Company, a division of HCPro, Inc. in Marblehead, MA, to help create a new multi-disciplinary peer review process. It also created a task force made up of 10 elected and informal physician leaders.

"We chose [physician leaders] who we expected would understand and be objective about coming up with a solution," says Donna Fulton, MD, vice president of medical affairs. "It wasn't a big group—we weren't trying to change the culture massively."

Although task force members were open-minded, they were, at first, hesitant to embrace the multi-disciplinary peer review concept, says Atlas, who was then chief of staff elect. "We didn't walk in to the first meeting with Greeley thinking "This is the greatest idea in the world.' We needed to be educated and convinced."

The task force met with a Greeley consultant once a month for nine months for instructional and educational sessions. The task force then presented the multi-disciplinary peer review process to the medical executive committee (MEC) and the governing board several times before all parties voted to launch a year-long pilot.
