Where can we find surgical hospitalist candidates?
Hospitalist Leadership Connection, February 2, 2010
Candidates for the position of surgical hospitalist must be all general surgeons by training. However, a variety of subspecialty-trained surgeons may be suitable for the position, depending on the nature of the program. These may include:
- Surgical critical care: If the hospital has a surgical or “mixed” ICU and if the medical intensivists do not provide adequate coverage
- Trauma: If the hospital is a trauma center
- Advanced laparoscopy: Broadens the coverage of general surgery that may be covered by the program
- Vascular: Broadens the range of coverage by the program suitably by incorporating a field of surgery that is often emergent in nature
The above expert is adapted from The Surgical Hospitalist Program Management Guide: Tools and Strategies for Executives and Physicians, by John Nelson, MD, FACP, FHM, and John Maa, MD, FACS, and foreword by Robert M. Wachter, MD, published by HCPro, Inc.
