Question candidates with retention in mind

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, January 19, 2010

Successful recruiters know that employee retention begins long before a candidate is hired. Hospitalist programs that are successful in keeping great hospitalists on staff are adept at reading between the lines during the interview process. If all of a candidate’s questions concern compensation and vacation, the recruiter should see it as a red flag.

The following questions will help you determine whether the candidate in question will fit with your program:

  • Why are thinking about making a move?
  • What’s important to you in your career?
  • Why are you interested in being a hospitalist?
  • What are your subspecialty interests?
  • What is your preference for scheduling?
  • How flexible are you in terms or coverage hours/scheduling?
  • Would you be opposed to working nights?
  • Why have you chosen to interview at this program, and what other programs are you looking at?
  • What are your long-term goals?
  • What are your professional aspirations?

Remember: In the face of physician storages and increased patient demand, it can be difficult to objectively evaluate issues such as fit and long-term expectations. However, securing the right hospitalists up front will help save your facility time and money in the long run.
