Year in review: Hospital medicine in 2009

The most notable year in hospital medicine used to be 1996, when the phrase “hospitalist” was first coined in the New England Journal of Medicine. That is the year typically associated with the official birth of hospital medicine.
The year 2009 was also a milestone for hospital medicine. The American Board of Internal Medicine launched its certification in hospital medicine, and the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) began offering a Fellow of Hospital Medicine (FHM) certification.
Hospital medicine is considered the fastest growing medical specialty, with 30,000 practicing hospitalists in the country, according to SHM.
