Hospitalist program demographics released
Hospitalist Leadership Connection, November 10, 2009
Where are hospitalist programs cropping up? A researcher at the University of North Florida, department of public health, found that organizations that use the hospitalist model are located in communities with certain characteristics. “The hospitalist model: Does it improve the quality of care?” published in the spring issue of the Journal of Health Care Finance, states that those communities have:
- Higher-per-capita income communities
- Fewer uninsured patients
- More Medicare managed care
The hospitals that use the hospitalist model have the following characteristics:
- Shorter length of stay
- Better quality of care
- Higher occupancy rates
- Wider range of clinical services
“From a managerial perspective, this study demonstrates a correlation between the hospitalist model and reduced length of stay and enhanced quality,” states the study.
